Most people visit the Karakoram in summer. But in winter, the Hushe valley in Baltistan becomes a quiet white world with two rare adventures: climbing frozen waterfalls and searching for snow leopards.
Ice climbing in Hushe
Discover Karakoram introduced winter ice climbing in the Hushe valley, and we have hosted climbers here every winter for about three years. The frozen walls are around 200 to 300 metres high, with routes for both improving and experienced ice climbers. Our next season runs in January and February 2027.
Climbers stay in the village, meet local families and climb with the same Hushe guides who work on the big peaks in summer.
Snow leopards and Himalayan ibex
In February and March, snow leopards and Himalayan ibex move lower down the valleys. A family of snow leopards has been seen in Hushe in every season for the last three years, and in the mating season their calls can be heard across the valley.
On our snow leopard trips, local spotters and guides lead you to the best viewpoints with telescopes and binoculars. There is never a guarantee with wild animals, but your chances in Hushe are among the best in Pakistan.
What to expect
- Cold, dry days and very cold nights, so bring good down clothing
- Simple, warm village guest houses
