Gasherbrum V, also known as G5 is a mountain at an altitude of 7,147m above from the sea level. It is part of the great Gasherbrum massif in the Karakoram mountain ranges that is located in Skardu, a region on Gilgit-Baltistan. It was part of peaks on the south ridge of Gasherbrum IV, until it got named by Swiss Geologist and Himalayan expert Gunter Oskar Dyhernfurthi in 1934.
The Karakorum Mountain Range is a massive chain of mountains across Pakistan and China that hosts one of the greatest mountains of the world including K2, Gasherbrum and Nanga Parbat. It is 500km long and 200km wide and connects with Hindu Kush and Himalaya Mountains at few points.
Gasherbrum V summit was first attempted in August 1978 by a 12 man Japanese expedition team. The team attempted three times and only three members could reach 7006M on East III side. The team lost their team leader Ryuichi Babaguchi, who lost his life a day before when he fell in to a crevasse. Two years later, another unsuccessful summit attempt was made by a French team from the mountains south side. In the later years many attempts were made for the Gasherbrum V summit, but were unsuccessful and could only manage to reach below 6700M.
In the summer of 2014, two Korean climbers Nak-jong Seong and Chi-young attempted the summit form the peaks northeast face. They stood on the top of the summit of Gasherbrum V after an exhausted climb and a 24 hours long descent in darkness since there were avalanches in the day time.
