Ice climbing in the Karakoram is one of the newest and wildest winter adventures on Earth. In winter 2024, Discover Karakoram organised the first ice climbing expedition in the Pakistani Karakoram, when a Spanish French team led by Rafa Vadillo opened four new icefalls in the Hushe valley: Shoma Chan (175 m, WI 4+), Wasoq Left (250 m, WI 3+), Wasoq Right (120 m, WI 4+ above a frozen stream of about 300 m) and Lower Tisar (75 m, WI 4+). The climb was reported by Desnivel, Barrabes and Cumbres magazine. During the trip the team trained our local guides Ali Hassan, Ahmed Fata, Khadim Ali and Karim Hushevi on steep ice. Since then we have hosted ice climbing in Hushe every winter, with walls of about 200 m to 300 m. Hushe village (about 3,050 m to 3,200 m) is the home of our team and the base for every climb: you sleep in a heated guesthouse, walk to the ice in the morning and come back to a warm stove at night, with Masherbrum (7,821 m) above the valley. The season runs from about 15 December to 15 February, and our next fixed group departure starts in Islamabad on 20 January 2027.

Where is ice climbing in Pakistan?

In the Hushe valley in Gilgit Baltistan, at the foot of Masherbrum (7,821 m). Hushe sits at about 3,050 m to 3,200 m and the icefalls are a short walk or a few hours from the village.

When is the ice climbing season in the Karakoram?

From about 15 December to 15 February. January is usually the best month. Our 2027 fixed group departure starts in Islamabad on 20 January 2027.

How long are the ice climbs in Hushe?

The established lines are from about 75 m to 300 m: Shoma Chan 175 m, Wasoq Left 250 m, Wasoq Right 120 m of steep ice above a frozen stream of about 300 m, and the Tisar icefalls.

    What are the grades?

Mostly WI 3+ to WI 4+, with easier ice for training and harder new lines for strong teams.

Who opened the first ice climbs in Hushe?

In winter 2024 a Spanish French team led by Rafa Vadillo opened four new icefalls in the Hushe valley with logistics by Discover Karakoram. Since then we have hosted ice climbing every winter.

    Is this suitable for beginners?

The trip is best for climbers with some ice or winter climbing experience. Beginners can join with a slower program focused on training on easier ice; tell us your level when you book.

Do I need my own ice climbing gear?

Yes, please bring your own ice tools, crampons, harness, helmet, boots and personal gear. Our team brings group ropes and anchors. Rental gear in Pakistan is very limited.

    How cold is it?

Very cold. Days can be around 0 °C in the sun, and nights are often between minus 10 °C and minus 20 °C. You need full winter mountaineering clothing.

Fly from Islamabad to Skardu, then about 6 hours by jeep through Khaplu to Hushe. If winter flights are cancelled we drive the Karakoram Highway.
